Is Acupuncture a Waste of Time and Money? Or the Best Investment You'll Ever Make?

Is Acupuncture Really Worth It? Let’s Talk About It Honestly.

Maybe you’ve tried everything already. Or perhaps you’ve been quietly hoping something would just work.

Let’s explore the real costs, the benefits, and what happens in a session so you can decide if acupuncture is the missing piece in your wellness journey.

How Our Pricing Compares

Acupuncture pricing in the UK typically ranges from £50 to £120 per session, depending on location, practitioner experience, and session length.

In larger cities like London, prices tend to be higher due to clinic overheads and demand. In contrast, smaller towns such as Middlesbrough offer more accessible rates without compromising quality. Most clinics charge slightly more for the initial consultation (£60–£80), as it includes a full health assessment and treatment plan.

At our clinic, fees reflect our experience, qualifications, and high level of care, while remaining affordable for our community. Our multi-session packages also encourage consistency and support better long-term outcomes.

What Is Traditional Acupuncture Treatment?

Traditional acupuncture is based on an ancient healing system that’s been practised for thousands of years. Rooted in Traditional Chinese Medicine, it aims to restore balance by stimulating specific acupuncture points along meridians, energy pathways that influence physical, emotional, and mental health.

Using ultra-fine, sterile acupuncture needles, these points are gently activated to improve circulation, reduce inflammation, calm the nervous system, and support natural healing. Sessions begin with a consultation to tailor your treatment.

People commonly seek acupuncture for:

  • Pain relief – including chronic pain, migraines, and tension headaches

  • Hormonal balance – for irregular periods, PCOS, or PMS

  • Emotional well-being – to regulate mood and reduce stress

  • Immune system support – to improve resilience and reduce fatigue

  • Menopausal symptoms – including hot flushes, night sweats, and mood swings

  • Fertility support – for natural conception or IVF preparation

This approach is recognised by the NHS and supported by clinical guidelines from the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE), particularly for chronic pain conditions.

Acupuncture can help manage many conditions, ranging from skin issues and sleep disturbances to pain and hormonal imbalance, by supporting the body’s natural healing processes.

Is Acupuncture Treatment Worth It Per Session?“Quote graphic reading ‘Your health is an investment, not an expense’ – featured in Deanna Thomas Acupuncture blog about the value of acupuncture treatments in Middlesbrough”

The real cost isn’t the price of one session, it’s the cost of staying stuck.

How many days have you pushed through a dull ache, emotional exhaustion, or chronic symptoms, hoping things would just improve?

While not a quick fix, acupuncture has been a turning point for many. You’ll be supported with a plan that’s fully tailored to your lifestyle, goals, and needs.

Acupuncture Points: What Are They and Why Do They Matter?“Diagram of acupuncture points on the human body, face, and ear – used to explain how acupuncture supports nervous system, hormone balance, and pain relief”

Acupuncture points act as access points to your body’s healing systems. Each point is chosen for a purpose, whether to calm the nervous system, reduce muscle tension, or restore hormonal balance.

They’re selected based on your individual diagnosis and can support symptoms ranging from migraines and irregular cycles to sleep disturbances and anxiety.

Your Initial Consultation: What to Expect

“Deanna Thomas conducting an initial acupuncture consultation with a client at her Middlesbrough clinic – discussing health history and treatment goals”

At your first session, we’ll discuss your medical history, lifestyle, and the particular problem you’re facing. This typical session helps your practitioner understand the root causes, whether it’s a dull ache, chronic fatigue, or a more complex issue.

From headaches and hormone imbalances to immune concerns, acupuncture can support many painful conditions. It’s generally well-tolerated, and most clients leave feeling calm, energised, or both.

Your initial acupuncture session also includes treatment using sterile, single-use needles. Your practitioner will explain your treatment plan, how often you should return, and how acupuncture fits alongside other therapies such as physiotherapists, massage, or nutrition.

Insurance Companies: Can I Claim Acupuncture Through My Health Plan?

Yes! Many private insurance providers reimburse acupuncture treatments. If you’re unsure, contact your insurer, especially if you have holistic or complementary cover.

Please note: you will need to pay for your appointment upfront, and then claim the cost back through your provider. We’ll issue a receipt once payment has been received, which you can submit for reimbursement.

Cancellation Policy

We operate a 48-hour cancellation policy to ensure we can offer your space to someone else if needed. Rescheduling is easy via our booking system or by contacting the clinic.

The Evidence: What Science Says About Acupuncture

Acupuncture has stood up to modern scientific scrutiny. Over 4,000 clinical trials have been published in respected journals like BMJ, JAMA, and The Lancet, exploring acupuncture's role in treating pain, sleep issues, menopause symptoms, and more.

Chronic Pain

A 2018 meta-analysis of 20,827 patients found acupuncture was significantly more effective than both sham acupuncture and no treatment, with lasting effects up to a year later (Vickers et al., 2018).

Menopause

In a controlled trial, women experienced a 36.7% drop in hot flashes after just 8 sessions, with benefits lasting long after treatment ended (Avis et al., 2016).

Sleep and Anxiety

A 2021 randomised trial showed that acupuncture significantly improved sleep quality and reduced anxiety, with measurable biochemical shifts in stress hormones (Chen et al., 2021).

These findings reinforce what our clients often tell us: it works, and the growing body of evidence continues to confirm acupuncture’s effectiveness across many areas of health and wellbeing.

  • Battlefield Acupuncture – Originally developed in the military, it targets ear points to reduce pain and inflammation. One study showed pain scores dropped from 6.3 to 3.8 (Clark et al., 2020).

  • NADA Protocol – A 5-point ear acupuncture system shown to reduce pain, anxiety, and stress. In a 2024 trial, 47% of NADA patients saw pain reduced by 50% or more (Jones et al., 2024).
