Acupuncture For Pregnancy

Welcome to Deanna Thomas - Acupuncture & Wellbeing

Are you expecting and looking for natural ways to support your pregnancy journey? As a mum-to-be, you deserve care that’s as unique as your pregnancy.

That’s where I come in. I’m Deanna Thomas, a licensed acupuncturist specialising in women’s health and obstetrics. I’m here to support you through the ups and downs of pregnancy, from those early weeks of morning sickness in early pregnancy to the final stages of preparing for birth.

My Acupuncture clinic is based in Middlesbrough and serving clients from Darlington, Yarm, and Stockton, I offer safe, gentle acupuncture treatments tailored to your changing needs.

Whether you’re dealing with back pain, sleep issues, or anxiety about labour, my approach combines traditional wisdom with modern expertise to help you feel your best.

Why choose acupuncture? When standard treatments are limited during pregnancy, acupuncture offers a natural, safe and effective alternative.

Acupuncture has shown to be a safe and effective way to alleviate many of the discomforting symptoms of pregnancy.

It’s my passion to provide you with holistic care that nurtures both you and your baby. Let’s work together to make your pregnancy journey smoother and more comfortable.

The Gentle Touch: Acupuncture Needles and Your Comfort

Worried about needles? Don't be. Pregnancy acupuncture uses ultra-fine, sterile needles that most women find surprisingly comfortable. Many of my clients describe their sessions as deeply relaxing, providing a precious moment to relax and connect with their baby.

Understanding What Acupuncture Is and How It Works

Acupuncture is a form of Traditional Chinese Medicine that involves inserting thin, sterile needles into specific points on the body to balance the body’s energy, known as “Qi” or “life force energy.”

This practice helps to relieve various symptoms, promote relaxation, and support overall health. Stimulating certain acupuncture points can improve blood circulation, relieve stiffness and pain, control symptoms like nausea and vomiting, and strengthen the spine to alleviate pregnancy-related discomfort.

Our approach focuses on using acupuncture needles to stimulate specific points, promoting relaxation, reducing pain, and enhancing overall health. Each treatment plan is customised to meet your specific needs, ensuring you receive the best possible care. During pregnancy, acupuncture can be especially beneficial in alleviating common symptoms such as nausea, back pain, and stress, making it a safe and effective treatment option for pregnant women.

The Science Behind Acupuncture Treatment

A recent study published in The Guardian highlights the potential benefits of acupuncture for pregnant women experiencing back and pelvic pain.

The research suggests that this traditional Chinese medicine technique can effectively alleviate discomfort during pregnancy, offering a safe and natural alternative to conventional pain management methods.

This finding aligns with the growing body of evidence supporting acupuncture's efficacy in addressing various pregnancy-related issues, including depression, as recognised by health authorities like the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE).

What to Expect from Your Pregnancy Acupuncture Session

Your journey with us begins with a comprehensive in-person consultation. This initial meeting is an invaluable opportunity for us to understand your unique health profile and pregnancy experience.
During this session, which typically lasts between 60 to 90 minutes, we'll delve into your medical history, current health status, and any specific concerns or discomforts you're experiencing. It's a chance for you to share your pregnancy journey so far and discuss your hopes and expectations for acupuncture treatment.
We'll explore various aspects of your well-being, including:                                                                 Your pregnancy timeline and any previous pregnancies                                                           Current symptoms or discomforts
Sleep patterns and energy levels
Dietary habits and nutritional needs
Emotional well-being and stress levels
Any other health concerns or questions you may have
This thorough initial consultation allows us to create a personalised treatment plan tailored specifically to your needs and your stage of pregnancy. It's also an excellent opportunity for you to ask questions and learn more about how acupuncture can support you throughout your pregnancy.
The cost for this comprehensive initial consultation is £70. We believe this investment in understanding your unique situation is crucial for providing the most effective and personalised care throughout your pregnancy journey.
Following our discussion, you'll receive a tailored and relaxing acupuncture treatment. We use only high-quality, sterile acupuncture needles that are gently inserted into specific acupuncture points. These needles are thinner than a human hair, so you'll barely feel them.
You'll then have the opportunity to relax for about 20 minutes with the acupuncture needles in place. Many patients report feeling a sense of deep relaxation, warmth, or a gentle tingling sensation during this time.
After the treatment, you may experience a feeling of calmness and rejuvenation. As part of your session, we'll also provide advice on complementary techniques to support your health between appointments. These may include dietary recommendations, gentle exercises, or relaxation techniques tailored to your specific needs and stage of pregnancy.
