What is traditional Chinese acupuncture and how does it work?

Originating from Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), this holistic approach has evolved over thousands of years, focusing on balancing the body's vital life force energy, known as "qi." This therapy stimulates a cascade of healing effects by delicately inserting very thin needles into specific acupuncture points on the human body to facilitate the flow of energy and restore equilibrium. By targeting energy channels, or meridians, it unblocks obstructions and rekindles the body's innate healing mechanisms, aiming to restore balance and vitality by influencing the flow of qi through more than 2,000 acupuncture points in the human body.

One of its remarkable qualities is the release of endorphins, the body's natural painkillers, along with bolstering immune function and reducing inflammation through the release of anti-inflammatories. These mechanisms promote the body's innate ability to heal and thrive.

If you are in search of Acupuncture Services in Middlesbrough or are curious to learn more about this ancient therapy, you have come to the right place.

What sets Traditional Chinese Acupuncture apart is its holistic outlook on health and well-being. It prioritises treating the entire individual rather than merely addressing isolated symptoms. Frequently Asked Questions

Do you accept health insurance?
Yes, were dedicated to making healthcare accessible and affordable, and as a registered member of the British Acupuncture Council and FHT, we maintain the highest standards of professional care.
Please note, while we do not chase insurers for payment, you will be required to pay for your treatment upfront.
If your healthcare plan, including Aviva, covers acupuncture, you can then seek reimbursement from your insurer.
Many insurance providers offer varying degrees of coverage for acupuncture as a complementary therapy. We recommend contacting your insurance provider directly for specific details about your coverage, to ensure you are fully informed about your eligibility for claims.
Is Acupuncture painful?
When it comes to acupuncture and the sensation of needle insertion, many people are pleasantly surprised to find that it is not as painful as they might expect. The needles used are very thin, much finer than those used for injections or blood tests, which minimizes discomfort.
During insertion, patients might feel a minor prick or a slight pinch. Once the needles are in place, common sensations include tingling, warmth, or a dull, heavy feeling in the area, often described as therapeutic or deeply relaxing. These sensations are typically mild and are considered part of the healing process in acupuncture therapy.
How many sessions will I need?
Acupuncture is a cumulative form of alternative medicine, and its benefits often build up over time. This is why we highly recommend a course of treatment, as one session is usually not sufficient to see significant results. The duration and frequency of acupuncture treatments can vary depending on the individual's condition and their response to therapy. Typically, a series of sessions is necessary to allow the body to respond fully to the acupuncture's effects. Each session builds upon the last, enhancing the body's natural healing process and bringing about more pronounced and sustained benefits.
Can you have cupping therapy and acupuncture at the same appointment?
In our sessions, we often combine acupuncture and cupping therapy at no additional cost, offering a holistic treatment experience. However, it's important to note that cupping is not suitable for everyone. Some individuals, especially those with certain deficiencies, may not be ideal candidates for cupping. We assess each client's individual needs to determine the most beneficial and safe treatment approach.
Do you wash and reuse acupuncture needles?
No, we do not wash and reuse needles. In acupuncture practice, it is standard to use sterile, disposable needles for each session. This is a crucial aspect of maintaining safety and hygiene standards. Reusing needles would pose a significant risk of infection and is not in line with professional acupuncture practices. After each acupuncture session, the used needles are safely disposed of in accordance with medical waste disposal regulations.

What are the risks of acupuncture?
While acupuncture is generally safe when performed by a qualified & licensed acupuncturist, there are some risks and side effects to be aware of.

These can include soreness, minor bleeding, or bruising at the needle sites. In rare cases, there can be more serious side effects, such as infections or needle injury. It's important to ensure that your acupuncturist uses sterile, disposable needles to minimize risks. Any side effects are usually mild and transient. Always discuss your health history with your acupuncturist to ensure the best care tailored to your needs.
What is the difference between auricular acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Acupuncture?
Auricular acupuncture is a specialized form of acupuncture where needles are inserted into specific points on the ear. It's based on the principle that the ear is a microsystem reflecting the entire body. This method is often used for pain relief, addiction treatment, and stress.

Traditional Chinese acupuncture, in contrast, involves inserting needles at various points all over the body along meridians, which are pathways for Qi (energy). It aims to balance the body's energy flow for a wide range of health conditions, focusing on holistic healing and the balance of physical, emotional, and mental health.

In my practice, I often integrate auricular acupuncture points alongside body acupuncture points, tailoring the approach to each individual's diagnosis and treatment plan. This combination allows for a more comprehensive treatment strategy, addressing specific health concerns more effectively. The choice of points, whether on the ear or the body, is determined by a thorough evaluation of your condition and the goals of the treatment.
Who isn't suitable to have Acupuncture?

While acupuncture is generally not recommended for pregnant women due to certain points potentially inducing labour, I am equipped to safely treat pregnant women as I have completed post-graduate CPD training in maternity and obstetrics. This specialised training enables me to confidently and safely provide acupuncture treatments tailored for pregnancy-related concerns. However, caution is still necessary for individuals with bleeding disorders, skin infections, pacemakers, or severe psychiatric conditions. Always consult with a healthcare provider and a qualified acupuncturist to evaluate any risks before starting treatment.
What side effects can I expect to have from having acupuncture?

After acupuncture, some common side effects that you may experience include:
  1. Soreness: You might feel soreness or mild pain at the needle insertion sites.
  2. Minor bleeding or bruising: Occasionally, needle insertion can cause minor bleeding or bruising.
  3. Relaxation or dizziness: Some people feel deeply relaxed or slightly dizzy after treatment.
  4. Emotional release: It's not uncommon to experience an emotional release as acupuncture can sometimes affect emotional blockages.
These side effects are typically mild and short-lived. It's important to inform your acupuncturist if you experience any discomfort or unusual symptoms.
What are Ear seeds and do you charge extra to apply them?
Ear seeds, small seeds or metal beads used in auricular acupuncture, are included as part of your treatment with us at no extra charge. They are applied to specific points in the ear to stimulate various body areas. While we provide ear seeds as a complementary part of our acupuncture sessions, we also offer them as a standalone treatment for £15, catering to those who might prefer just the ear seed therapy without a full acupuncture session.
What age range of clients do you treat with acupuncture, including younger patients?
We treat clients of all ages, including youngsters, with acupuncture, tailoring our approach to suit each individual's age and health needs. For minors, we recommend that a guardian remains present throughout the appointment to ensure comfort and safety. This practice ensures a supportive environment for our younger patients and peace of mind for their guardians.
Can Acupuncture make my symptoms worse?
In some cases, acupuncture can lead to a temporary exacerbation of symptoms, often referred to as a healing crisis. This phenomenon, though not common, can occur when the body begins to adjust and rebalance itself in response to the treatment. These symptoms are typically short-lived and are often followed by a period of symptom relief and improved well-being. However, it's important to communicate any changes in your symptoms to your acupuncturist, so they can adjust your treatment plan accordingly.
Where do you put the acupuncture needles?
In acupuncture, needle placement varies based on the system used and the individual's needs. While trained in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), I also practice other systems of acupuncture, which might involve placing needles in unexpected areas. This is because different systems have unique approaches to addressing health concerns. Common needle locations include the arms, legs, back, and abdomen, but they could also be placed in other areas based on your specific treatment plan. It's important to note that we use a minimal number of needles to maximize effectiveness while ensuring comfort.
