Does my partner need to have any fertility concerns for this to be worthwhile?
Not at all. Many couples book this session simply because they want to approach conception together, with both bodies in the best possible condition. It is not a session for when something is wrong. It is a session for when you want to give conception every possible advantage, for both of you.
My partner wants to know where the needles will be placed. Will any be near sensitive areas?
This is one of the most common questions we hear from male partners, and it is completely reasonable to ask. The acupuncture points used to support male fertility are located on the lower legs, feet, lower back, abdomen, and hands. No needles are placed near the genitals or anywhere that would feel intrusive or uncomfortable. You remain fully clothed throughout and Deanna will explain exactly where each needle is being placed before any treatment begins. Nothing proceeds without your agreement. Many male partners arrive sceptical and leave genuinely surprised at how straightforward and comfortable the experience is.
Can acupuncture genuinely help with sperm quality?
There is a growing body of research exploring acupuncture's effect on sperm parameters including motility, morphology, and count. The mechanisms being studied include improved blood flow to the testes, reduction of oxidative stress, and nervous system regulation. Sperm health is also responsive to lifestyle, nutrition, and stress levels, all areas we address as part of the session.
We have been trying for a while and it has not happened yet. Is this still appropriate for us?
Yes, and often this is exactly when couples find it most valuable. Fertility acupuncture is not a first step only. It can be a meaningful form of support at any stage of your journey, whether you are just beginning, have been trying for some time, or are awaiting test results. You are welcome to book regardless of where you are in the process.
My partner is nervous about needles in general. What should we expect?
Acupuncture needles are very fine, much thinner than the needles used for injections, and most people experience very little sensation. Some describe a mild heaviness or warmth at the needle site, which is a sign the treatment is working. Deanna is experienced in working with clients who have not had acupuncture before and will take as much time as needed to ensure both of you feel comfortable before any treatment begins.
How many sessions would you recommend?
Acupuncture works cumulatively. A single session is a meaningful starting point, but ongoing support, weekly or fortnightly, allows the treatment to build and have a more sustained effect. After your first session, Deanna will talk through a recommended plan based on both of your health pictures. There is no pressure to commit to anything on the day.
Is this only for couples trying to conceive naturally, or is it suitable alongside IVF?
Both. If you are on a natural conception path, this session supports your monthly cycle and overall fertility health. If you are preparing for IVF, supporting both partners' health in the lead-up to treatment is equally important, as egg quality and sperm quality both affect IVF outcomes. Deanna can discuss the most appropriate approach for your specific situation during the session.
Where is the clinic and is there parking?
The clinic is at The House, 283 Acklam Road, Middlesbrough, TS5 7BP. Free parking is available at Acklam shops, a short walk from the clinic. Deanna works Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm.
